Recognized for outstanding innovation in utilizing new technology to accelerate assembly and production processes – saving $3,000 per day
Downers Grove, IL — May 2, 2013 — Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., U.S.A. (KMM), received the 2013 COMMON/IBM Power Systems Innovation Award for their industry leadership in implementing LongRange from LANSA, a native mobile application development tool for the IBM i, to transform their assembly, production and warehousing processes.
KMM, a leading global transportation manufacturer of all-terrain and utility vehicles, personal watercraft and passenger rail cars, saw the opportunity to automate their just-in-time manufacturing processes by replacing a card-based kanban system with an electronic solution. Up to 4,500 kanban cards were used daily to move parts from KMM’s warehouse to the production floor, and on average, eight to 10 people were involved in the card cycling process. Relying on LongRange, KMM can now rapidly record and track inventory on assembly lines in real-time with a native mobile app – realizing a savings of $3,000 per day in labor costs directly related to staff not having to handle the manual kanban cards.
"Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp. U.S.A. would like to sincerely thank everyone who voted for KMM to receive the prestigious COMMON/IBM Power Systems Innovation Award. Although the goal was, and will always be to stay ahead of our competitors through innovation and continuous process improvements, we are extremely humbled by this recognition,” says Paul Kramer, Assistant Manager at KMM. “The most challenging aspect of this project was letting go of fears and pushing the limits of our company, ourselves, LongRange and the IBM i."
"KMM is demonstrating exactly how companies today should be using mobile strategies to significantly improve their business processes,” said Steve Gapp, president of LANSA Americas. “We congratulate KMM for their vision and leadership in improving the quality and capability of existing business systems by implementing new technology solutions for the IBM i."
Leveraging several LANSA tools, including LANSA CodeStart ERP Frameworks, LongRange and Visual LANSA, KMM have realized immediate return on investment (ROI), improved accuracy and achieved total quality control.
